The PS5 and Xbox Series X will be released soon, but it will be a few years until games are released that truly show off the potential of the new hardware. Video game consoles don't have the same kind of daily use for the average consumer. Smartphones are such a part of daily life that people are willing to pay a lot of money for new models. The prediction assumes that the userbase is going to keep upgrading every couple of years, but not everyone is going to be willing to make that kind of investment. If Nintendo or a third-party company releases a game designed for newer models of the Switch, then it won't work as well on the older models. The most popular functions of a smartphone aren't taxing on its hardware, whereas video games are only growing more complex over time. It might make sense from a business standpoint to slowly release incremental hardware upgrades over time, but that system won't work as well for a dedicated video game console as it does for phones. This will allow Nintendo to keep the massive fanbase of the Switch, without risking losing that fanbase with a new system, as it did with the jump from the Wii to the Wii U. According to Toan Tran from 10 West Advisors (as initially reported by Bloomberg), Nintendo may adopt the same model as Apple uses with the iPhone and keep upgrading the Switch, rather than releasing new systems. Nintendo could abandon its old approach and focus on releasing incremental hardware upgrades every couple of years.

For the 3DS, the upgraded models improved the quality of the 3D effect and allowed games to run faster. In the case of the DS, the upgraded models improved the size and quality of the screen, while making the system more compact. The Nintendo DS and 3DS line of handheld systems received gradual upgrades over their run. Nintendo has released already launched several upgraded versions of its handheld systems in the past, including the Switch Lite and a few hardware revisions to the Switch, itself. Analysts are predicting that Nintendocould move to a similar business model used by Apple, by gradually upgrading the Switch over time with new and improved hardware models, rather than releasing brand new consoles every generation.
